Student Trainee (Forestry)

This position is assigned to the Oregon State Office and duty stationed in Colton, Oregon at the Horning Seed Orchard. The incumbent uses knowledge of the most basic or commonly used rules, procedures, or operations to perform a few repetitive tasks common to the forestry program. The incumbent may perform any or all of the following duties:
Participates in forestry inventory, timber sales, timber trespass, cruising, and road layout projects; carries out routine activities and assists in other work. Marks timber in accordance with simple merchantability specifications and marking rules, Computes tree summaries, applies applicable volume tables, computes the net volumes, and drafts simple maps. Performs other similar duties as assigned in support of the tree improvement program for the BLM's seed orchard such as:
orchard surveys; various duties associated with cone collection; seed processing; orchard maintenance such as:
tag maintenance, tubing, staking, pruning, weed control, and graft maintenance and greenhouse support such as potting, fertilizing and weeding. Physical Demands:
The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, climbing, stooping, bending and lifting. Work Environment:
Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extreme heat and col, rough and slippery terrain, insects, snakes, deadfalls and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered. This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled). This is a temporary, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected not-to-exceed 1 year. This type of appointment is intended only for temporary projects, to perform labor-intensive tasks not requiring subject matter expertise, or to fill traditional summer jobs. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this temporary appointment. To be eligible, an applicant must:
Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position.Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school and completed 1 year of post high school study. Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 or higher.General Experience Requirements:
Six (6) months of (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicants ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject are of the position. For example:
Forestry aid or technician work; Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment; Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use; Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work that provided a familiarity with the subject matter.In addition to the experience requirements described, seasonal experience may also be creditable. A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Shorter periods may be combined to make a season provided a total of at least 3 months' experience is shown. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
